Bouquerie

Lagrasse

A heroic family

Bouquerie Lagrasse is located in the building that once housed Lagrasse’s bakery and was home to baker Lucien Bertrand, his wife Agnès and their three daughters Ginette, Suzanne and Jeannine. In 1944, towards the end of the Vichy regime, the baker and his wife offered to hide Paula Tattmar (née Neiger) and her partner Martin Tattmar, a Jewish couple in danger of capture by the German militia. They were hidden for a period of 9 months, and the three children who were included in this act of bravery managed to keep their presence secret from the rest of the villagers and even from their grandparents.

Righteous Medal

In 1968, the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem awarded Agnès and Lucien Bertrand the title of Righteous Among the Nations. In 1972, Agnès Bertrand was awarded the Médaille des Justes by the Israeli Ambassador to France.
